Your heroes will generally gain a level every two quests they complete. If the battle is 5-1 or somthing similar, it should just auto resolve. I would say 9/10 battles are silly block fights.

Also with the new sharing the losses system and very slow reinforcement, there is an abundance of heavily damaged AT's kicking about that are cannon fodder for blocking.

Its a bit of a silly tactic though, I recently used a single man in an AT to block a territory, cant remember how many enemy were there, but its stupid and just annoys fps players. I dont mind eitherway, as long as they do something to stop those silly fps battles. What SHOULD be done, is allow generals to choose if the battle they have created will be used in the Match Maker, or only selectable from the map/list. No one has to fight it, the Generals are wanting auto-resolve to finish the match after an hour or so.
